About the artist

In 1998, Gijs established himself as an independent artist in Carré (Tilburg). There he worked on his oeuvre until his passing.

He was a master in the theory of colour, which is especially reflected in his early abstract work. The symbiosis of colours and shapes brings motion in his artwork. Later on he focused on Pointillism combined with Naive art, One-line drawings and Sumi-é techniques.

He is mainly inspired by mythology and nature.

Unfortunately, his modest and headstrong character prevented him from breaking through as an established artist. It was obvious he was talented since he was nominated for ‘up-and-coming talent’ in 1993, where he had the honour to show his work to Beatrix, former Queen of the Netherlands, in the Royal Palace of Amsterdam.
